Dodge this!

Someone on Google Plus uploaded a few pictures related to Mario Kart 7. Nothing looked new until I did a double take on the blue shell.

It's this:

Doesn't look all that bad, right? Well, the big thing is that there are no wings on the blue shell. There's been wings in every blue shell except MK64. So if this is truly the case, then it leads me to believe a couple things about our great friend:

1. You have to dodge through the air. That has to be kind of tricky, right? You can't just activate the glider at any moment; you have to be at a certain point in the race, and then it activates. I hope this is not the case.

2. It will be unavoidable naturally. I said this with Mario Kart Wii, and it turns out that wasn't the case, because you could with a mushroom.

How many losses can I avoid in this fast-paced session?

Here's one of a couple new series I'm starting up, called The 10 Trials.

In this series, I will run random time trials given on the Mario Kart Channel. I want to see how long I will last until I get my 100th loss. Each session is 10 time trials. So here you go ...

Tanooki, Shy Guy coming to Mario Kart 7

Well this is really interesting for Mario Kart 7. In new screenshots, Tanooki will be a power-up, and Shy Guy will be playable.

Regarding Shy Guy: I like this, in part because it gives us a new character to mess around with. Lakitu would have been good enough as the only new character, but this takes things to another level, especially if its personal stats make it worth playing either as a high-tier or low-tier character.

Regarding the Tanooki power-up: I love it. The game was getting too Americanized in that players would bump their way to wins. After watching a lot of videos, I feared everyone picking Bowser and just bumping their way through everyone that was nearby (those videos showed low-tier characters getting rocked really bad). The Tanooki will keep them honest in that opponents will have a counter to those that like to bump. Lightweight characters will probably benefit the most.

Someone posted video of themselves playing Mario Kart 7 at EuroGamer Expo. I'm not sure how much there is to learn from this, especially since the guy fell a lot.
