The 10 Trials - Session 7

I'm back with another episode of The 10 Trials. I try to keep the good times going as I attempt a 10-0 record in this session. But will some early trouble hold me back?

Information about Mario Kart 7 online

Credit goes to Nintendo Everything here. They received information about possible features that will be included in Mario Kart 7.

- Download Play support
- Local/online matches
- Create custom communities with specific parameters
- Share communities with others
- Can’t electively turn on/off whatever item you choose and adjust their frequency
- Start with one long list of different items, characters, kart paths
- Then choose one of these as a specification
- Can have a green shell only race or a Luigi only race or a standard kart frame race
- Can’t specify more than one option at a time (making matches such as a no Blue Shell, mushroom wheel race impossible)
- Balloon Battle: pop as many opponent balloons as possible within the time limit
- How many balloons you lose has little impact
- Coins Battles are timed as well
- Collect as many coins as possible while hitting your opponents’ vehicles to get them to lose their coins
- Six Battle Mode courses: Battle Course 1 from Mario Kart Super Circuit, Big Donut from Mario Kart 64 and Palm Shore from Mario Kart DS, Honeybee Hive, Sherbet Rink and WuHu Town as well
- Mirror Flip races and other community settings included
- Mirror Flip flips the course you’re racing on

The one that stands out is the item adjustment. If you can adjust the frequency of items in gameplay, that instantly makes the game competitively viable; players will be able to eliminate the over-powering items and leave what can't do much damage (bananas, basic shells, mushrooms). It's almost guaranteed most of the online players will go for no blue shells, although there probably will be some that will make it blue shells only.

In any case, this is great news for the game. It is possible to have custom tournaments.

Life-sized karts for Mario Kart 7 built by West Coast Customs

| No comment yet

This might be the sickest thing in all of Mario Kart history. West Coast Customs has built a life-sized replicas of some of the karts that will be in Mario Kart 7. It looks so awesome. The karts are on display at the Los Angeles Auto Show, currently taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Here's more from CNET:

Mario's personal race car and Luigi's Bumble V car were constructed and can be driven under their own power. However, the hang glider and underwater propeller on Mario and Luigi's rides, respectively, are not functional.

I remember Nintendo having a life-sized kart available during its tour for Mario Kart Wii, but that pales in comparison to what West Coast Customs has done. If you get a chance to go to the auto show, be sure to check it out.

Girl Gamers UK has some info and pictures of Nintendo's appearance at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show. It appeared to be a cross-promotion of some new rides as well as the new game.

More pictures are on the Girl Gamers UK site.

This is the Japanese overview trailer of Mario Kart 7. Pretty much what you know now of what will be in the game is explained here. It's in Japanese, so who knows whether this will air verbatim in North America.

A different kind of Mario Kart Wii bundle

| No comment yet

Word has gotten out that a new Wii bundle will be for sale, and Mario Kart Wii will be included once again. The difference is that this bundle will feature the newer version of the Wii, one which sits horizontally instead of vertically.

You also won't be able to play GameCube games on this version. So no more Mario Kart Double Dash. Perhaps those games will start showing up on the Virtua Console? If Nintendo is going this route, I hope so. Or else, there's really no point in getting this bundle.

Retro Studios helped with Mario Kart 7

| No comment yet

According to Go Nintendo, Retro Studios had helped with Mario Kart 7 because of a shortage in developers. One of the reasons was that Nintendogs was being worked on at the same time as Mario Kart 7 but with an earlier deadline.

A story in a future Nintendo Power issue will highlight why this was the case.

Retro Studios has worked on several Nintendo games in the past, including the updated Metroid series, and Donkey Kong Country Returns.
